Agile Coach As Agile Leader: How Agile Coaches Lead, Who They Impact, Why They Succeed

What is the role of a leader in a self-organized team? What is the "leader" part of servant-leader? What do Agile Coaches really do all day? And how can you know if you as a coach are doing your job well? Come to this groundbreaking presentation to formulate your own answers to these questions and more.

As Agile Coaching has emerged into an identifiable discipline, there exists a tension around the appropriate type of leadership a Coach should exhibit, even, indeed, whether the Coach has a leadership role at all. And if the Coach is not a leader, or one without authority, what does she do all day?

In this session we will examine a new set of distinctions around the role of Agile Coach, including a less conventional, more mature style of leadership -- the catalyst leader. Further, we will explore a set of competencies that Agile Coaches must have if they are to be the most effective they can be, including Coach/Facilitator, Teacher/Mentor, Lean-Agile process knowledge, and Domain Craftsman. Finally, we will examine the impact of Agile Coaches on the teams they coach, and why their work is critical to team progress.

An organizational change coach and consultant for 20 years, Michael has worked with Fortune 500, small businesses and non-profits. For the past 10 years, he has specialized in Agile and Lean teams and associated enterprise transformation efforts, working with over 50 teams in that time. Michael loves coaching and mentoring Agile Coaches in these transformation methods and skills.

Michael is trained as a Team and Organizational Coach, holds a Masters degree in psychology, has training in Co-Active leadership, executive coaching, and organizational behavior. He is a Certified Organization and Relationship Systems Coach (ORSCC), Certified Professional Facilitator (CPF), and a Certified Scrum Master (CSM).
